Alice Burla

At only 17 years of age, Alice Burla, winner of the 2013 American Prize, is quickly becoming internationally recognized as a serious musician and very talented pianist.

Born in Toronto, Alice Burla began studying piano at the age of 4, made her orchestral debut at 5 and played her first solo recital at 6. Ms. Burla was one of the youngest students accepted to The Juilliard School and studied with O.Yablonskaya. Ms. Burla won 1st prize at the Canadian National Music Competition, 8th New York Music Competition and was a Finalist at the 13th Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition in Japan (2008).

Alice has participated in major international festivals such as the Verbier Festival, International Summer Academy Mozarteum (Salzburg), Tel Hai International Piano Master Classes (Israel), Paderewski Piano Academy (Poland), and International Piano Master Classes in Berlin.

In 2007, 2008 and 2011 Alice Burla was featured on PBS telecasts of “Live from Carnegie Hall” and on WQXR as part of “From the Top” national radio broadcast.

Since the age of 10, Alice Burla has successfully concertized internationally in Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Japan, Israel, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Ms. Burla has performed in such famous venues as Salle Cortot (Paris), the Wiener Saal at the Mozarteum (Salzburg), Zankel and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall in New York City, ACT City Concert Hall in Hamamatsu (Japan), Glenn Gould Studio at CBC Radio (Toronto) and many others.

Ms. Burla has played a wide repertoire, including Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Eroica Variations by Beethoven, 2 Suites for two pianos by Rachmaninoff, 12 Etudes Op.25 by Chopin, transcriptions by Liszt and Rachmaninoff and 15 piano concertos with several orchestras, including the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, New York Sinfonietta, Chamber Orchestra Amadeus (Mexico), Donetsk Philharmonic Orchestra (Ukraine), Torun Symphony Orchestra (Poland) and others.

In 2010, Ms. Burla appeared as a piano prodigy in the 20th Century Fox major film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Starting fall 2013, Alice will be studying with Dmitri Bashkirov at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid.
