Kieran Hanlon

“All Things Bass,” as the title of Kieran J. Hanlon’s business card, certainly begins to tell the story of this versatile bassist. Kieran is a substitute double bassist for both the Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestras, and traveled to Carnegie Hall with the Buffalo Philharmonic in May of 2013 to join the orchestra for its appearance at the Spring For Music festival. Currently pursuing a Master of Music Degree in Double Bass Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music with Professor of Double Bass, James VanDemark, Kieran performs as an intern with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra through the Eastman School of Music’s Orchestral Studies Diploma program.
In June 2013 Kieran won third prize in the International Society of Bassist’s Orchestral Competition during the organization’s 2013 convention held in Rochester, NY. This past summer Kieran joined by invitation both the Gateways Music Festival Orchestra (Rochester, NY) and the Lake George Music Festival Orchestra for concerts in August.
Kieran earned both a Bachelor of Music degree in Double Bass Performance and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Jazz Studies, Bass from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Diana Gannett, Stephen Molina and Robert Hurst. He graduated in 2012 with Highest Honors. Kieran has served as Rotating Principal Bass for the 2011 National Repertory Orchestra, as Principal Bass for the Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra as well as The University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Dearborn (MI) Symphony Orchestra for the 2010-2011 season. In addition to frequent engagements as a freelance classical musician in upstate New York, Kieran is a first call jazz bassist in the area, and plays with local jazz greats such as John Nyerges, Andy Calabrese, Dick DeLaney, Chris Azzara, Bob Sneider, Gabe Condon, Rich Thompson, Dave Cohen, Mike Melito, Dave Mancini, Rich Felice, Vince Ercolamento, Bill Tiberio, Carl Pellito, and Mike DiMartino. Kieran performs on both acoustic and electric basses, and enjoys playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, and Celtic among other genres. Kieran is also an avid teacher, and was the double bass instructor as well as a chamber music coach for the Eastman School of Music’s “Summer @ Keuka” music camp in July of 2013. He also maintains a private studio of 15 students.
