Tiedan

Tiedan Yao

Tiedan Yao was born in China, but started piano at the age of five in Sweden at the Uppsala Music School. In 1999 he moved to Calgary and continued his studies at the Mount Royal University Conservatory. Currently Tiedan is a senior at Columbia University majoring in Financial Economics and Mathematics while studying piano at the Juilliard School in their exchange program with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky. His teachers have also included Hung Kuan Chen, Tema Blackstone and Charles Foreman.

Tiedan has performed chamber music and has participated in masterclasses with artists such as Steven Kovacevich, Gary Graffman, John Perry, Anton Kuerti, Robert
McDonald, Jerome Lowenthal, Julian Martin, Roberto Diaz, Jon Kimura Parker, the Daedalus Quartet, Chengzong Yin, and Nelita True among many others. A winner of many prizes, when he was 13, Tiedan represented Alberta at the Canadian Federation of Music Teacher’s Association National Piano Competition and placed third. At 14, he received first prize at the Canadian Music Competitions (25 years and under). In 2008 Tiedan won First Prizes at the Morningside Music Bridge International Concerto and Chamber Music Competitions. Shortly afterwards he received First Prize at the 11th Eastman International Young Artists Piano Competition along with the audience award and all special prizes. In 2009, Tiedan won Third Place at the Louisiana International Piano Competition and in 2010 he was a prizewinner at the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati.

Tiedan has performed with the Calgary Civic Symphony Orchestra, the Lanzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, the Regina Symphony Orchestra, the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Arts Centre
Orchestra among others. He has played concerts in North America, Asia and Europe including the Shanghai Grand Concert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Tiedan enjoys volunteering and frequently performs for various charity events.
